Melton Adult Education Programs Come of Age in Australia
Quiet and unsung, the Melton Jewish adult education program is slowly revolutionising adult education activities around the world. There are now 62 Mini-Schools in 60 cities throught the United States, Canada, United Kingdom and Australia (Sydney established in 1992 and Melbourne in 1996), attended weekly by some 5,500 students. Over 1000 Australians have graduated from this unique two-year Hebrew University-developed curriculum, and many of them have continued on to a third and fourth year of graduate study. The Florence Melton Adult Mini-Schools are named after American-Jewish philanthropist and education visionary Florence Melton, whose husband Samuel Melton established the Melton Centre for Jewish Education at the Hebrew University. The Melton programs offer a highly structured two years (120 hours) of study, meeting two hours per week, thirty weeks each year. Learning is organised around four courses: Purposes of Jewish Living, Dramas of Jewish Living, Rhythms of Jewish Living and Ethics of Jewish Living.
Melton programs commence in late February in both Sydney and Melbourne. Contact Sydney's Melton Academic Director (02) 9449 7870 or Melbourne's Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning (03) 8517 5933.
