Melton Adult Education Programs Come of Age in Australia
Quiet and unsung, the Melton Jewish adult education program is slowly revolutionising adult education activities around the world. At latest count, 38 Florence Melton Adult Mini-Schools - including Sydney (established in 1992) and Melbourne (1996) - are now operating. Over 500 Australians have graduated from this unique two-year Hebrew University-developed curriculum, and many of them have continued on to a third and fourth year of graduate study. The Florence Melton Adult Mini-Schools are named after American-Jewish philanthropist and education visionary Florence Melton, whose husband Samuel Melton established the Melton Centre for Jewish Education at the Hebrew University. The Melton programs offer a highly structured two years (120 hours) of study, meeting two hours per week, thirty weeks each year. Learning is organised around four courses: Purposes of Jewish Living, Dilemmas of Jewish Living, Rhythms of Jewish Living and Ethics of Jewish Living.
Melton programs commence in early March in both Sydney and Melbourne. Contact Sydney's Shalom Institute on (02) 9931 9659 or Melbourne's Jewish Museum of Australia on (03) 9534 0083.
