Courses / Programs

The Hebrew University offers a great range of courses to meet any students needs. Our main courses of study relevant for Australian students wishing to study at an undergraduate level and in English are listed below the links provided. Additionally, students may be interested in studying at a graduate/doctoral level or in Hebrew. We also offer some great options for the Israeli Summer in the form of month long programs. Mishpatim (Law Seminar)


Who’s eligible?
Any student who has completed one year of university.

What is it? Mishpatim introduces students to Jewish and Israeli law, covering such topics as the Israeli Parliamentary system, the Law of Return, the Rabbinical courts, military law, international law and Jewish bio-medical law. Day trips around Jerusalem are also included in the course.

Length of program: 3 Weeks

Dates:
Early January to early February (TBC)

Credit is available at most universities towards Law (and possibly Arts) Degrees.

Ulpanim (Hebrew Language Courses)

Who’s eligible? Anyone with an interest in improving their Hebrew skills!

What is it? The Division of Hebrew Language Instruction offers modern Hebrew language courses on all levels. Since its establishment in 1965, the number of students studying in the Division has risen to about 2,500 annually, making the Rothberg International School the largest academic institution in the world for the study of Hebrew.

Hebrew language is taught by a highly professional and experienced staff. Emphasis is placed on internalizing the language and practical usage. Teaching methods range from traditional classroom instruction and conversation practice to language laboratory sessions that utilize audio and video cassettes, computers and new multimedia educational aids.

Length of Program: The School offers intensive Modern Hebrew language courses during the summer and winter (Ulpanim) as well as Hebrew language courses and electives during the academic year. The Division also runs a center for training teachers of Hebrew as a second language.

Dates: Summer Ulpan = 6th August - 25th September 2008
Winter Ulpan = 18th January - 19th February 2009

Semester Program / Freshman Program

Who’s eligible? Any student who has completed one year of university. Note: If you wish to attend the university but are a school leaver or have not yet attended a university in Australia then the Freshman Program is the appropriate program for you. It is practically the same as the Semester Program, but is specifically for school leavers and is designed to be similiar to a GAP year in the US.

What is it? One Year/Semester Program (OYP) students benefit from a diversified academic experience while earning credits that may be transferred to their home college or university. A wide variety of courses, offered mainly in English, may provide credit in such areas as archaeology, business, history, literature, philosophy, religion, communications, international relations, political science, psychology, sociology and science.


Students will generally take a fully loaded 4 subjects per semester, which includes a compulsory hebrew subject. However, students may opt to study as few as 3 subjects per semester. Students may also customise their own semester's study, choosing their favourite subjects from a wide range of disciplines contained in this course list. Length of Program: A full semester / year.

Dates: Autumn Semester = 5th October 2008 - 1st January 2009
Spring Semester = 22nd February 2009 - 1st June 2009

Note: These dates do not include the comulsory ulpan which students must complete prior to commencing a semester program. Only students who achieve high scores in their initial pre-departure hebrew test will be exempt from participating in the ulpan.

It is also advisable for students to be at the university a day or two prior to commencement of their courses for registration.

Housing / Dormitory Life

The student housing complexes on Mount Scopus, overlooking the incredible panorama of Jerusalem, are walking distrance from the University. They offer an independent setting appropriate for overseas students.

 

Living in University housing is an important part of the overall experience of studying abroad. RIS students have the opportunity to meet new friends from different cultures and continents – North America, South America, Asia, Africa and Europe – as well as a chance to share experiences with Israeli students.

Students from abroad accepted to long-term programs or to summer courses at the RIS are allocated housing provided that they make their reservations on time. For more detailed information on housing, follow this link.
